Most people who know Matera know it for the Sassi, the cave dwellings carved into the rock face that earned the city a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Aurora Viaggio Segreto collection isn't interested in the famous things. It goes looking for the secret ones. In Matera's case, that secret is underground: the Palombaro Lungo, an enormous cistern hand-carved from soft sedimentary rock full of fossil shells, hidden beneath the city for centuries and supplying it with water long before anyone thought to look.
The Aurora 88 Viaggio Segreto Matera translates that into a pen. Stone tones and the deep ultramarine of the water meet in the body, and the turquoise ink included with the pen carries the colour of that underground reservoir into whatever you write. The Aurora 88 is fitted with an 18-karat gold nib and a piston filling system for filling directly from a bottle.
The edition is limited to 888 pieces worldwide. Inside the box, a QR code links to the music of Matera, because Aurora's Viaggio Segreto concept is built around listening as much as looking. Every city in the collection has its own sound. A hand-painted watercolour bookmark, designed as a postcard from the journey, is also included. Eight Italian cities, each with a hidden story. Matera is the first.
