Even until today, the Japanese writing culture is one of the most vivid but also demanding in the world. Japanese script, based on Kanji signs, is complex and expansive, and pen and paper continue to be the best means to get a message across. This has translated into a wide variety of Japanese brands that work with remarkable specialization and put continuous efforts in providing the best possible writing experience, tailored to each individual’s handwriting. Among the top of these Japanese brands, we find Sailor, founded as early as 1911!

The Sailor Pro Gear collection, one of the essential collections of the brand, embodies the Japanese ideal of a pen: A handy, pocketable form factor, simple, stylish design, and a nib of the utmost highest quality. Function over form is definitely at play here, and you’ll immediately notice at the first write – these pens are made to write effortlessly! The care and attention put into making these nibs is unseen. Sailor is one of very few brands in the world where an experienced nibmeister oversees development and production to ensure high quality. The catalog of Sailor writing instrument is noticeably focused on a wide variety of nib grades, ranging from extra fine to broad, but also the so-called ‘Music’ (a wide nib made for calligraphy script), and ‘Zoom’ nibs (a special nib shape that varies in line width depending on the angle of the nib relative to the paper surface).

Important to note, is that Japanese nibs typically will write roughly one size finer than Western equivalents from Montblanc, Pelikan,… This is due to the fact that Japanese Kanji need to be written down small and precise, while remaining legible. You can obviously come and experience the full range of nibs in our store to find out which one suits your handwriting, and if you order online we recommend to choose one size wider than you typically would with Western brands (for example, Western F-fine is more-or-less equivalent to Japanese M-medium). Since the establishment in 1911, the Sailor Pen Co. has been proudly maintaining its belief in the importance of precision writing instruments. All pens are made exclusively in there own factory in Hiroshima Japan using the best quality materials available.
