The Caran d'Ache 849 Mosaic Water Green is a Special Edition with an unusual origin: the colour and pattern were chosen by the brand's own community through an Instagram vote. This Water Green version has a satin-lacquered body in a cool, fresh green with a pastel geometric pattern stamped into the surface. It is part of a four-colour collection, and one of the few pens where the design brief came directly from the people who would end up using it.
The body is hexagonal aluminium, light without feeling insubstantial. The shape sits naturally in the hand, the push mechanism is straightforward. The satin finish adds a tactile quality that photos don't quite convey. There is nothing fussy about writing with it.
The pen comes fitted with a black Caran d'Ache Goliath medium refill, good for around 600 pages of writing. It takes all Caran d'Ache Goliath ink refills. It arrives in a printed cardboard case that carries the graphic identity of the Mosaic collection through to the packaging.
