Tomoe River Paper

Tomoe River, the gold standard for fountain pen writing paper

Tomoe River is no ordinary paper. It is a legend in the world of fountain pens and fine writing. Originally developed by Japanese company Tomoegawa Co., Ltd. for commercial printing, including bibles and magazines, fountain pen enthusiasts and calligraphers quickly discovered what makes this paper so exceptional. Today, Tomoe River is produced by Sanzen Paper, part of paper giant Chuetsu Pulp, which acquired the name and production rights from Tomoegawa in 2021. The end products, notebooks and loose leaf sheets, are further developed by SAKAE Technical Paper, the dedicated stationery partner that also created the sister brand Iroful.

At just 52 gsm, nearly half the weight of regular copy paper, Tomoe River is surprisingly thin and light. A 68 gsm variant is also available, slightly thicker and with a subtly different texture, yet equally impressive in use. Both weights are robust enough for daily use, hole punching and even printing. The special coating ensures that your fountain pen literally glides across the paper like silk, delivering sharp, crisp lines with no resistance whatsoever.

What truly sets Tomoe River apart is how it responds to fountain pen ink. The paper showcases the most beautiful shading (the gradation of color within a single ink stroke), stunning sheen (the shimmer of ink in certain light) and vivid color depth like no other paper can. Want to truly see what your favorite ink is capable of? Write with it on Tomoe River.

Despite its thinness, Tomoe River is resistant to bleed-through and feathering, even with wet, heavily pigmented inks or broad nibs. The double-sided coating minimizes ghosting, although some show-through with very dark inks is normal for a paper of this weight. Both sides of every sheet are perfectly usable, making it ideal for notebooks and planners.

Tomoe River is available in white and cream, and in multiple formats: A4, A5 and B5. Whether you opt for loose sheets to make your own notebooks, or for ready-made notebooks, the writing experience remains the same: sublime.

Perfect for calligraphy, letter writing, journaling and bullet journaling, any project where ink quality and line precision are paramount. Left-handed writers should note that drying times may be slightly longer with very wet inks, a minor caveat for an otherwise unrivalled paper.

Looking for something with a little more body? The sister brand Iroful by SAKAE Technical Paper offers a slightly thicker alternative at 75 gsm, with particular emphasis on color expression and sheen. But for the purest, thinnest, most elegant writing experience, Tomoe River remains the gold standard.

Choose Tomoe River and write on the paper that connoisseurs worldwide have treasured for decades, a sheet that brings your ink, your pen and your words to their absolute best.
