Put the Cross Century II 23 kt. Gold Ballpoint Pen next to a Classic Century and the difference is immediate: same conical cap, same clean profile, but a barrel of nearly 9 mm against the Classic's 7. Running down that barrel is the vertical stripe engraving Cross has kept for decades, under 23 karat gold plating.
Those extra millimetres change how the pen writes. At 26 grams it sits heavier in the hand than the slim Classic, so you press less to get ink on paper. A twist mechanism deploys the tip rather than a click, half a turn of the top section and you are writing. Cross backs that mechanism for life, covering mechanical and manufacturing faults, though not the scratches and plating wear any pen picks up over the years.
It ships with a black medium refill, the Cross 8513. Fine and broad widths and blue ink are stocked separately under Cross refills. If the slimmer barrel suits you better, the Classic Century is the one to look at. Supplied in a Cross gift box.
