Caran d'Ache launched Prismalo Aquarelle in 1931 as the first water soluble colour pencil in the world. The name plays on prisme à l'eau, water prism. The metal tin is instantly recognisable by the Matterhorn, with the chalets, the Swiss flag and the alpine flowers.
The core is water soluble but at 2.95 mm noticeably thinner and harder than the Supracolor core. The result: the point lasts longer and the line comes out finer. Architects, graphic designers and illustrators like it for that. The hexagonal barrel is FSC certified cedar wood with a white sealed end, and the colour number is printed on it.
Beyond Swiss Made, these pencils meet the European CE EN71 toy standard, which makes them safe in children's hands. Hatching dry and then washing out with a wet brush goes smoothly, and the colours stay clear. Penworld carries the sets of 12, 18 and 30 colours. If you want a softer, thicker core that releases more pigment, Supracolor Soft Aquarelle is the next step. For permanent work that will not dissolve, look at Pablo. The range sits under Caran d'Ache Coloured Pencils and in Coloured Pencils.
Frequently asked questions about Caran d'Ache Prismalo Aquarelle
How thick is the Prismalo Aquarelle core?
The core measures 2.95 mm. That is thinner than the 3.8 mm of Supracolor and Pablo, so Prismalo keeps a sharp point longer and lends itself better to fine linework.
Are Prismalo pencils suitable for children?
Yes. Alongside the Swiss Made label they meet the European CE EN71 toy standard. They are also used by architects, designers and illustrators.
Which Prismalo sets does Penworld carry?
Penworld carries the sets of 12, 18 and 30 colours.
