Of all the watercolour pencils Caran d'Ache makes, Supracolor Soft Aquarelle is the one people know. The core is soft, break resistant and loaded with pigment. Used dry it draws like an ordinary soft coloured pencil; run water over it and the colour dissolves into a wash. That double character explains the following among hobbyists and working illustrators alike, and has done since 1988.

The core is 3.8 mm thick and sits in a hexagonal barrel of FSC certified cedar wood that stays steady in the hand. Colour number and name are printed on the barrel, so replacing a single spent pencil is quick work. The range counts 120 colours that layer and blend without turning muddy. The broad core suits large scale work with generous areas of colour.

Penworld has Supracolor in metal boxes of 40, 80 and 120 colours. If you want a thinner, harder core for tighter linework in the same technique, take a look at Prismalo Aquarelle. If your work should not dissolve at all, you end up at Pablo or Luminance 6901. Every line sits under Caran d'Ache Coloured Pencils and in Coloured Pencils.

Frequently asked questions about Caran d'Ache Supracolor Soft Aquarelle

What is the difference between Supracolor and Prismalo?

Both are Caran d'Ache watercolour pencils. Supracolor has a soft 3.8 mm core that releases plenty of pigment and washes out generously. Prismalo has a thinner, harder 2.95 mm core that keeps its point longer and gives finer linework.

Can Supracolor be used dry?

Yes. Used dry, Supracolor behaves like an ordinary soft coloured pencil for hatching, blending and layering. Adding water is a choice rather than a requirement.

What can you combine Supracolor with?

Caran d'Ache points to Pablo permanent pencils, Neocolor wax pastels and gouache. That lets you build mixed media work where wet and dry layers complement each other.
