The Namiki Yukari Pine Needles Fountain Pen has a black lacquered body with gold pine branches and fine needles. A geometric pattern in gold runs between the branches, and small coloured flecks sparkle in the lacquer. The gold clip carries the Namiki logo and ends in a small ball.
The motif is made in togidashi-hira maki-e by Kokkokai, a group of maki-e artisans founded in 1931. Every Namiki bears either the Kokkokai name or the name of the maker. Maki-e starts with an undercoat of black lacquer. The motif is drawn on the lacquer with brushes and sprinkled with gold powder, then more lacquer goes over it and is rubbed back with charcoal until the pattern appears. For the background and the scenery the maker uses togidashi, and the main motif follows in hira maki-e. Lacquering, drawing, sprinkling and polishing go round many times: at Namiki the work takes more than three months, and some pens go through the process as many as 130 times.
In Japan the pine, matsu, stands for a long life and strength. The tree belongs to New Year: many Japanese then place a kadomatsu in front of the house, a decoration of pine branches and bamboo, to welcome the gods.
You write with an 18 carat gold nib in size 10. The pen fills with cartridges or a converter. Namiki is Pilot's brand for maki-e fountain pens, with a tradition that reaches back to the roots of Pilot itself. Pilot describes Namiki pens as the fusion of skill and spirit handed down from earlier generations.
