Blackwing has an unusual history. The original pencils, made by Eberhard Faber, were a fixture in the studios of musicians, animators, and writers until they went out of production in the mid-nineties. After years of scarcity and rising secondhand prices, CalCedar brought them back in 2010, along with a range of accessories. The sharpeners Blackwing developed for this are not an afterthought: they are tools built specifically for the long, curved point that defines how these pencils write and draw.
Penworld carries two Blackwing sharpeners. The Blackwing One-Step Long Point Sharpener is a compact hand sharpener made from anodized aluminum with a German steel blade. One turn produces a long, curved point that holds up better than a short sharp tip. Available in black, grey, and white. The Blackwing Desktop Sharpener is a desk model with a helix blade, adjustable point length from long and curved to short and blunt, an auto-retract mechanism that keeps the pencil finish intact, and a pull-out shavings drawer with a click closure.
Both sharpeners are built for the core Blackwing pencil range: the 602, Matte, Pearl, and Natural. These are available at Penworld in 12-packs or as part of a gift set, including the Walnut Gift Set with 24 pencils and a One-Step Long Point Sharpener in a round-grain walnut box with cork lining.
Frequently asked questions about Blackwing sharpeners
What is the difference between the Blackwing One-Step Long Point Sharpener and the Desktop Sharpener?
The One-Step Long Point Sharpener is a compact hand sharpener made from anodized aluminum. It produces a long, curved point in a single motion and is available in black, grey, and white. The Desktop Sharpener is a larger desk model with a helix blade and an adjustable point length dial, an auto-retract mechanism that protects the pencil finish, and a pull-out shavings drawer that clicks shut.
Why do Blackwing sharpeners produce a longer point than a regular sharpener?
Blackwing pencils are designed for a writing and drawing experience that works best with a longer point: less pressure needed, smoother movement across the page. The sharpeners are matched to this. The blade angle and German steel blade are set up to produce a longer, curved tip that wears down more gradually and is less prone to breaking than the short, steep point of a standard sharpener.
Do Blackwing sharpeners work with other pencil brands?
Blackwing sharpeners are sized for standard 7 mm pencils, which is the usual diameter for wood-cased pencils. They will work with other pencil brands of the same size. For best results, they are calibrated and optimised for use with the Blackwing pencil range.
