The Caran d'Ache 849 Paul Smith Edition 5 Silver Mechanical Pencil is the only piece in the collection where the raw aluminium does the talking. No lacquer, just the metal itself as the ground for Paul Smith's Signature Stripes in eight colours. Against raw silver, the stripes sit differently than they do on the black — warmer, more tonal, less of a contrast and more of a conversation. Paul Smith's signature is on face 4, and the clip and push crown are chrome-finished in the same silver as the body.
Each press of the crown advances a 0.5mm lead. An eraser is built into the crown. The hexagonal body is light and comfortable for extended use, whether for writing or sketching. The silver version has a quieter quality than the black, which is part of what makes the two worth considering alongside each other.
The pencil takes standard 0.5mm HB graphite leads. It arrives in the same glossy black metal case as the rest of the Edition 5 collection, with the Caran d'Ache + Paul Smith logo on the outside and the Signature Stripes pattern printed on the inner lid.
