The Namiki Aya Seiryu Limpid Stream Fountain Pen has a body in dark lacquer, with blue wavy lines like a stream and fine silver and coloured flecks. The gold clip carries the Namiki logo and ends in a small ball.
The motif is made in togidashi maki-e by Kokkokai, a group of maki-e artisans founded in 1931. Maki-e starts with an undercoat of black lacquer. The motif is drawn on the lacquer with brushes and sprinkled with gold powder, then more lacquer goes over it and is rubbed back with charcoal until the pattern appears. Lacquering, drawing, sprinkling and polishing go round many times: at Namiki the work takes more than three months. Every Namiki bears either the Kokkokai name or the name of the maker.
Seiryu, ęø ęµ in Japanese, means a clear stream. The name of the collection, Aya, means things like beautiful colour, lustre and pattern. The bodies are finished with coloured lacquer and carry patterns around a theme, in togidashi maki-e.
The pen is fitted with an 18 carat gold nib in size 30, which Pilot describes as a soft and smooth touch, and fills with cartridges or a converter. Namiki makes its own nibs. Pilot describes Namiki pens as the fusion of skill and spirit handed down from earlier generations.
