Tom's Studio was founded by Tom Gyr, a product designer and craftsman based in England. He built his name making calligraphy pens and fountain pens by hand, but grew frustrated with the throwaway nature of the fineliners he used every day. That frustration led to the Lumos: a refillable pen with interchangeable Japanese-made tips that covers fineliner, brush pen, and writing pen in a single body. The housing is precision machined anodised aluminium, available in several colours.

The Tom's Studio range at Penworld includes the Lumos Pro (Single and Duo), the Lumos Mini, the Wren, the Studio Fountain Pen, the Pocket Fountain Pen, and a Mechanical Pencil. The Lumos Pro ships with eleven tips: fineliners from 0.1mm to 1.0mm, chisel, bullet, and brush tips, plus two writing nibs. The Duo puts two tips in one body; the Single trades that for a larger ink reservoir. The Wren is the compact option: pocket sized, same capillary refilling method. All pens work with water-based dye fountain pen inks.

Worn-out tips can be replaced individually with separate pen nibs and tips, so the pen itself never needs to go in the bin. For ink, Tom's Studio fountain pen inks are formulated for the Lumos and Wren, though any dye-based fountain pen ink without particles or binders works equally well.

Frequently asked questions about Tom's Studio

Which ink can I use in a Tom's Studio Lumos or Wren?

The Lumos and Wren work with dye-based fountain pen inks. Inks containing shimmer particles or acrylic binders will block the reservoir and should be avoided. Most calligraphy inks fall into that category and are not suitable. Tom's Studio fountain pen inks are formulated specifically for these pens.

What is the difference between the Lumos Pro and the Lumos Mini?

The Lumos Pro is the full-size version, available as a Duo with two tips in one body, designed for everyday use at a desk or in the studio. The Lumos Mini uses the same refillable system and tip set, but in a compact format that fits in a pocket. It is the better choice if you want a Tom's Studio pen with you at all times.

How long do Tom's Studio pen tips last?

It depends on paper texture, tip size, and writing pressure. Finer tips wear faster, especially on rough paper or with a heavy hand. Tom's Studio uses Japanese-made tips that generally outlast most disposable alternatives. When a tip does wear out, you replace only the tip, not the pen itself. Replacement pen tips are available separately.
