TWSBI is a Taiwanese brand that grew out of Ta Shin Precision in 2009, a manufacturer with decades of precision experience in plastics and metals. The name comes from the Chinese phrase San Wen Tong, whose initials were reversed into TWS, with Bi added for writing instrument. TWSBI quickly built a name with affordable demonstrators: fountain pens with a clear body that shows the ink, and a piston filler you can service yourself.
The Diamond 580 is the flagship of that approach. The faceted barrel catches the light and keeps the pen from rolling off your desk, while the piston filler holds close to 2 ml of ink. Our range includes the clear standard version, the 580AL with an aluminium grip and piston mechanism, and the 580ALR with a ribbed aluminium grip for extra hold. Alongside these sit special editions such as the Iris, the Smoke Rose Gold II and the White Rose Gold II, each with its own colour and finish.
The 580 fills from bottled ink rather than cartridges. You will find plenty of choice under TWSBI ink, and the TWSBI Diamond 50 ink bottle screws straight onto the pen for a clean fill. Every 580 comes with a wrench and silicone grease so you can fully disassemble and maintain it. The nib is stainless steel and available in EF, F, M, B and a 1.1 mm stub.
Frequently asked questions about TWSBI
What does the name TWSBI mean?
TWSBI comes from the Chinese phrase San Wen Tong, which translates as Hall of Three Cultures. The initials were reversed into TWS, and Bi, the Chinese word for writing instrument, was added. The brand is pronounced twizbie.
Can I use ink cartridges with the TWSBI Diamond 580?
No. The Diamond 580 has a built in piston filler and takes bottled ink only. The reservoir holds close to 2 ml, well above a cartridge or converter. You dip the nib into the bottle and turn the knob at the end to fill it.
What is the difference between the 580, 580AL and 580ALR?
The standard 580 has a plastic grip and piston mechanism. The 580AL swaps those parts for aluminium, giving the pen a more solid feel. The 580ALR adds a ribbed grip on top of that; the R stands for the rings machined into the grip for extra hold.
