Where the black version of the Caran d'Ache 849 Paul Smith Edition 5 is stark and graphic, the Silver works differently. The body is raw aluminium without lacquer, which gives it a metallic warmth that paint can't replicate. Against that ground, Paul Smith's Signature Stripes in eight colours sit more softly, more layered. The two 849 options in Edition 5 are designed to contrast with each other, and they do.
The hexagonal aluminium body carries the Signature Stripes embossed into the surface rather than printed on top of it, giving the pen a texture that's noticeable in the hand. Paul Smith's signature on the ballpoint. The clip and push button are chrome-finished in the same silver tone as the body, which makes the whole piece read as one.
The pen comes fitted with a black Caran d'Ache Goliath medium refill, rated for around 600 pages of writing. It is compatible with all Caran d'Ache Goliath ink refills. It arrives in a glossy black metal case with a silver Caran d'Ache + Paul Smith logo on the outside, the inner lid printed with the Signature Stripes pattern.
