The Caran d'Ache 849 Paul Smith Edition 5 Black makes a case for black as a design decision rather than a default. Against the satin-lacquered body, Paul Smith's Signature Stripes in eight colours read with more contrast than they would on a lighter ground. This is the bolder of the two 849 options in Edition 5, the fifth chapter of a collaboration that has been running for over a decade.
The hexagonal aluminium body carries the Signature Stripes embossed into the surface rather than printed on top of it, giving the pen a texture you can feel in the hand. Paul Smith's signature has also been added. Clip and push button are matt black chrome-plated, keeping the whole piece visually consistent.
The pen comes fitted with a black Caran d'Ache Goliath medium refill, rated for around 600 pages of writing. It is compatible with all Caran d'Ache Goliath ink refills. It arrives in a glossy black metal case with a silver Caran d'Ache + Paul Smith logo on the outside, the inner lid printed with the Signature Stripes pattern.
