The Namiki Yukari Royale Vermilion Urushi Fountain Pen has a body in vermilion urushi lacquer, without a motif, and a gold clip that ends in a small ball and carries the Namiki logo. It is the smaller size with the No.20 nib from the Urushi Collection.
Urushi is a natural lacquer from the sap of the Japanese lacquer tree. The finish is called Roiro Urushi Shiage: the final coat is oil free lacquer, and after polishing with a special charcoal, raw lacquer is rubbed in again and again. That deepens the lustre. The lacquer is durable, and the body sits more comfortably in the hand with use.
The Urushi Collection brings back the large fountain pen with the No.50 nib from the early 1930s, known as the 'No.50 Jumbo'. Pilot also offers a version with the No.20 nib, like this one. Namiki makes its own nibs.
The pen is fitted with an 18 carat gold nib in size 20. The work comes from Kokkokai, a group of maki-e artisans founded in 1931. Every Namiki bears either the Kokkokai name or the name of the maker. Pilot describes Namiki pens as the fusion of skill and spirit handed down from earlier generations.
