Pelikan Souverän M800: fountain pen, ballpoint and roller
Pelikan launched the M800 in 1987 as a larger version of the Souverän. The striped barrel is older than that: Pelikan has used the stripes since 1950 and they have become the brand's most recognisable feature. Capped, the fountain pen is about 14.2 cm long, half a centimetre shorter than the M1000. The barrel is cellulose acetate. Pelikan makes the material itself, starting from cotton, then grinds and polishes it until it shines.
The fountain pen is the M800. Its handmade nib is 18 carat gold, two tone with a rhodium coating, and is available in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium and Broad. Every nib is tested by hand. The ballpoint has a twist mechanism and takes the Pelikan 337 refill. The roller uses the 338 refill. The fountain pen and ballpoint come in Black, Black Green, Black Blue and Black Red, the roller in the first three.
The M800 is a piston filler and takes ink straight from the bottle. It does not use cartridges or a converter. For ink, see Pelikan Edelstein ink. If you want a different nib later, the M800 nib is sold separately. Ballpoint refills are under Pelikan ballpoint refill 337. If you would rather have silver coloured trim, that is the Pelikan Souverän 805. And if the M800 feels too small, look at the Pelikan Souverän M1000.
Frequently asked questions about the Pelikan M800
What is the difference between the Pelikan M800 and the M805?
The trim. On the M800 the clip and rings are gold coloured and the nib is two tone. On the M805 they are silver coloured, and the nib is fully rhodium plated. Otherwise it is the same pen.
What do M800, K800 and R800 mean?
The letter tells you the type of pen: M is the fountain pen, K the ballpoint and R the roller. The number 800 is the size within the Souverän range.
What is the difference between the M800 and the M1000?
The M1000 is larger and heavier, with a bigger nib that writes a little softer. The M800 is more compact and also comes as a ballpoint and a roller. The M1000 is a fountain pen only.
