A herd of bison walks around the barrel of the Retro 51 Smithsonian Bison Standing Strong Rollerball Pen. The animals and the hills behind them are acid etched into the metal, and the stonewashed copper finish makes the pen look like an old American coin. Turn the pen and you see a different animal each time. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA runs around the top, AMERICAN BISON around the bottom.
The pen is inspired by the Smithsonian exhibition Bison: Standing Strong and is officially licensed. The bison is the national mammal of the United States. More than a hundred years ago living bison grazed on the Smithsonian grounds. In 2026 they came back to the National Mall as three bronze sculptures at the entrance of the National Museum of Natural History. The top disc carries the Smithsonian sun logo, and every pen has its own number on the top ring. It is not a limited edition.
The top, clip and tip are finished in stonewashed pewter, a dull grey. Turn the knurled top and the tip comes out. A rollerball refill with black ink is fitted, and you will find a new one with our Retro 51 refills. The pen is 125 mm long, 12 mm in diameter and weighs 28 grams. It comes in a commemorative Smithsonian tube.
