Pilot Custom 845 Urushi Deep Blue Fountain Pen

The Pilot Custom 845 Deep Blue is a fountain pen that elevates the ancient Japanese art of Urushi lacquering to its finest expression. Its body is crafted from ebonite, a material long prized for its pleasant warmth in the hand and its subtle dampening of writing vibration. It is then hand-lacquered in kon-jo, the Japanese name for this deep, rich blue achieved through the expert blending of pigments with natural Urushi lacquer, a refined artisanal method in which thin layers of lacquer are applied, cured, and polished one by one. This demanding process takes months and results in a finish of remarkable depth, with subtle tonal variations that shift beautifully under changing light.

The two-tone 18-karat gold nib, size #15, is partially plated with rhodium for a delicate silver accent on the yellow gold. This large nib delivers a rich, wet ink flow with a slightly springy, buttery-smooth writing motion that is the hallmark of Pilot's finest instruments. The screw-on cap seals hermetically to keep the nib from drying out, and the inside of the cap is lined with a soft material that protects the Urushi lacquer when the cap is posted. Despite its generous proportions, the pen is surprisingly light at just 27 grams with cap.

The Custom 845 comes standard with the CON-70 vacuum converter, holding 1.1 ml of ink, making it compatible with any bottled fountain pen ink. Pilot IC-50 cartridges are also optionally compatible. The pen is presented in an elegant paulownia wood gift box, the traditional Japanese kiri wood case that perfectly reflects the exclusivity of this writing instrument.
