Pilot Custom 845 Urushi Vermillion Fountain Pen

The Pilot Custom 845 is a fountain pen that elevates the ancient Japanese art of Urushi lacquering to its finest expression. Its body is crafted from ebonite, a material long prized for its pleasant warmth in the hand and its subtle dampening of writing vibration. It is then hand lacquered using the Roiro technique: a refined artisanal method in which thin layers of lacquer are applied one by one, a process that can take several months and results in a deep, lustrous finish that only grows more beautiful over time as the lacquer is gradually polished by the warmth of your hands. The Custom 845 is available in a rich black, fiery vermilion or blue, all with gold trim.

The two tone 18-karat gold nib, size #15, is partially plated with rhodium for a delicate silver accent on the yellow gold. This large nib delivers a rich, wet ink flow with a slightly springy, buttery smooth writing motion that is the hallmark of Pilot's finest instruments. The screw on cap seals the nib hermetically, while the soft lining inside the cap protects the Urushi finish when you post the cap. Despite its generous proportions, the pen is surprisingly light at just 27 grams with cap.

The Custom 845 comes standard with the CON-70 vacuum converter, holding 1.1 ml of ink, making it compatible with any bottled fountain pen ink. Pilot IC-50 cartridges are also optionally compatible. The pen is presented in an elegant paulownia wood gift box, the traditional Japanese kiri wood case that perfectly reflects the exclusivity of this writing instrument.
