The Retro 51 Smithsonian Wright Brothers Aeroplane Rollerball Pen wraps the 1909 Wright Military Flyer blueprint around its body. Elevations, measurements and the lines WRIGHT BROTHERS AEROPLANE and MILITARY FLYER 1909 are printed onto a cream matte surface. The top, clip and tip come in antique copper.
Orville and Wilbur Wright built that aircraft for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, which bought it in 1909 after the flight trials went well. It was the first military aeroplane anywhere. Once its training days were over it went to the Smithsonian Institution in 1911, and it is still there. The Smithsonian sun logo sits on the top disc, and each pen carries its own number on the upper ring.
Twist the knurled top and the rollerball refill in black extends. The pen measures 125 mm, runs 12 mm thick and weighs 28 grams. It comes in a commemorative Smithsonian tube you can keep as a pen stand. Replacement refills sit under Retro 51 Refills.
