The Japanese pagoda tree is a deciduous broad-leaved tree of the Fabaceae family. In China, three Japanese pagodas were planted in the Tang Dynasty to mark the positions of the three dukes (taiji, tafu, and taho), who were high court officials, and since then, the tree has symbolized authority and success in life.
The tree was introduced to Japan as a medicinal tree around the time of the arrival of Buddhism, and as the character for "goju" indicates, it was used to carve masks out of the tree and placed them at the demon's gate to ward off evil spirits. Later, it was given the character "Enju" (meaning "longevity" in Japanese) and was prized as a "happy tree" that brought good fortune in terms of longevity and easy childbirth.
