Leuchtturm1917 HUMAN INTELLIGENCE – What You Write by Hand Comes from Your Own Head

An algorithm can draft your email, summarise your meeting and answer a question you are still busy formulating. Useful. Sometimes better than you would have managed yourself.

But what you write by hand comes from somewhere else. Your own experience, your mood that morning, a hunch you cannot quite explain. That is the idea behind HUMAN INTELLIGENCE, the new colour range from Leuchtturm1917, in four shades: Bubblegum, Burgundy, Moss and Dove.

Leuchtturm1917 puts it in three German words: Denken mit der Hand. Thinking with your hand.

The Four Colours

Burgundy is a deep, warm wine red. Bubblegum is exactly the pink the name promises. Moss sits closer to forest than to grass, and Dove is a quiet grey that goes with almost anything.

They never photograph well, Burgundy and Moss least of all. In real life they are darker.

Why Handwriting Sticks

Writing by hand is slower than typing. That sounds like a drawback until you notice what it does to you: a pen makes you decide what is worth writing down. Anyone who has ever typed up a whole meeting and remembered none of it knows the difference.

The Collection

  • Medium A5 Notebook – hardcover or softcover, with 251 numbered pages, a table of contents, eight perforated sheets at the back, two bookmarks and an elastic closure. The 80 g/m² paper is slightly cream and handles fountain pen ink well.
  • Drehgriffel Nr. 1 – a ballpoint with a hexagonal body and a contrasting tip. Twisting the head brings the point out; unscrew the same head to change the refill. Available with a ballpoint or a gel refill.
  • Drehgriffel Nr. 2 – an aluminium mechanical pencil with a lacquered brass tip that puts the weight where you want it. The 0.7 mm lead is fine enough to sketch with.
  • Pen Loop – self-adhesive, sticks inside the back cover, and holds anything from a slim pencil to the hexagonal Drehgriffel.

Your Own Fingerprint

A notebook is one of the few things that gets better the more you use it. The cover picks up a crease, there is a receipt tucked between the pages, and somewhere near the back sits an idea you will still be using months from now.

That is what this range is about: your own thinking is worth putting somewhere.
